Sam Butera was born in 1927 in New Orleans, and started playing sax at the age of 8, playing jazz, bebop, and later, R&B. His early influences are too many to list, but his 1949 recordings for the X label are strictly R&B. One of his major influences in New Orleans was Louis Prima, who hired him in 1954 to work in his Vegas act. He remained with Prima for decades, and was the leader of Prima's stage band, as well as the man who wrote and arranged many of Primas pieces. He's still active in Vegas, playing the Prima songs he arranged long ago.
